Ryan Braun underwent his second MRI of the year Monday, which certainly is not a good thing.

The Brewers' All-Star left fielder was out of the lineup for a third consecutive game Monday and wasn't even on the premises for the first pitch.

Braun stayed in Milwaukee to have an MRI performed on his ailing back. That test was negative, meaning there are no tears or any structural problems. When Braun will feel well enough to return to the lineup remains to be seen, however.

"We were just trying to rule out any possible reasons for the ongoing pain he is experiencing," said assistant general manager Gord Ash.

Ash said team physician William Raasch did not believe Braun's back discomfort will be a long-term problem. One of the reasons the Brewers wanted the MRI was to assure them they weren't looking at a probable stint on the disabled list.

And much like the MRI performed on Braun's intercostal area in spring training, the team wanted some peace of mind for Braun regarding his long-term health status.

"Dr. Raasch felt the MRI was of superior quality and was pretty confident they didn't miss anything," said Ash. "No tearing, no micro tearing. It all depends how quickly Ryan feels better."

Well, Braun actually felt better before the night was over. After arriving during the game, he pinch hit in the eighth inning and delivered a two-run double that tied the score, 3-3, and helped the Brewers pull out a 7-4 victory.

BREWERS 7, PIRATES 4: Pittsburgh has to be wondering what it takes to beat the Brewers after losing to them for the 16th time in a row. The Pirates seemed in control with a 3-1 lead in the eighth and ace Paul Maholm on the mound, but the Brewers rallied for two runs that inning and four more in the ninth to win.

Ryan Braun's pinch-hit two-run double in the eighth started the comeback. Then, after the Pirates went back on top by a run, J.J. Hardy tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Rickie Weeks followed with a three-run homer to complete the stunning triumph. RHP Yovani Gallardo kept the Brewers close by battling through seven innings without his best stuff and allowing only three runs.
