Milwaukee Brewers Roster Report 2009-05-05

Milwaukee Brewers Roster Report 2009-05-05
The Brewers' starting pitching, which figured to be a weak spot at the start of the season, actually has been solid. The Brewers have 15 quality starts, ranking among the best rotations in the majors. The hitting, however, has been sporadic at best. Too many hitters are struggling, including SS J.J. Hardy, C Jason Kendall and 1B Prince Fielder. The Brewers remain too reliant on home runs to score, making it difficult to win games when they don't hit the long ball.

PLAYER NEWS:

--LF Ryan Braun was out of the lineup for the third consecutive game with an ailing back. An MRI performed on Braun's back showed no structural damage and he was listed as "day to day." Braun had that test in Milwaukee and arrived in Pittsburgh after the game started, but delivered a pinch-hit two-run double in the eighth that started a comeback resulting in a 7-4 victory.

--3B Bill Hall made his first career start in left field in place of injured Ryan Braun (back stiffness). Hall robbed Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez of a hit with a charging, diving catch in the bottom of the first, but his debut in left did not last long. He left the game at the start of the bottom of the second with cramping in his right hamstring.

--INF Casey McGehee made his first start of the season at third base in place of 3B Bill Hall, who moved to left field. McGehee, who made the club as a utility infielder in spring training, had only nine at-bats for the season, including four as a pinch hitter.

--RHP Mark DiFelice's nine-appearance scoreless streak ended Monday when he surrendered a run in the eighth inning that allowed Pittsburgh to take a 4-3 lead. When the Brewers scored four runs in the ninth, however, DiFelice was credited with the victory to boost his record to 3-0.

MEDICAL WATCH:

3B Bill Hall (right hamstring cramps) left the game in the second inning May 4. He is day-to-day.

LF Ryan Braun (back tightness) didn't play May 2-4. He is day-to-day.
